The College Bound Summer Program |
| |
| College Bound is a college
transition program for students with disabilities who are
interested in attending college held in June on the Campus
of Virginia Tech. Commonwealth of Virginia high school
juniors, seniors or upcoming college freshman and their
parents are eligible to attend. College Bound's goal is to
provide information an experiences that will better prepare
students for the transition to post-secondary education. |
| Participants interact with
successful college students with disabilities, discuss
policies and strategies with disability service providers,
and are given hands-on opportunities with assistive
technologies. Students participate in workshops and
activities related to leadership, self-advocacy, college
prep, learning styles, study skills ,and team building. |
| |
| For parents, College Bound is an
opportunity to acquire transition information as it uniquely
relates to students with disabilities. It also gives parents
the opportunity to network with their peers and explore
aspects of their changing role as the parents of a college
student. |
| |
| The program also invites middle
and high school educators from across Virginia to attend
College Bound. The Educator Track is and important part of
the College Bound program. All participants will interact
with successful college students with disabilities, discuss
policies, strategies, rights and responsibilities with
disability service providers, and be given hands-on
opportunities with assistive technologies. Educators will
learn transition strategies and assistive technology
information from experts in the fields of federal law,
college accommodation services, transition resources, and/or
from other participants. |
| |
